Era of smart phones and dumb people?

"Didi, pleaseeeeeee let me play Daddy was a thief."
Me - I don't have it in my phone so...
"So download it from Play Store", interrupted my 5 year old cousin brother, leaving me in a state of bewilderment. How on earth did he know about Play Store?
"What's a Play Store, kid?",I asked, frankly hoping for a wrong answer.
"It's where we get all the games from!"said the young techie.

One of my friends (big Modi fan), on the day Modi won elections - "this guy's got guts. I so wanted him to be in power and with that done he'll be the real Indian hero."
Too much lauding! So it turned out, using the word 'hero' and 'power' didn't work out well for her as this is what we had to say:
Me - Power is his temptation and can prove to be his weakness. Those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. (Harry Potter!)
Other friend - A Hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulder to let him know the world hadn't ended. (Dark Knight Rises)
Me - Don't make people into heroes, mate. Heroes don't exist. (Sherlock)
Modi fan - Damn you both!
A great laughter followed this!

My sister, on her birthday - "Mamaji didn't wish me today. He always does!"
Me -"he's been busy with his work, lately. I'm sure he'll send you a message."
Suddenly her phone vibrates and she cries "It's him!"
"Ha! I told ya!" I said, elevated.
She reads the message, makes a grumpy face, leaves her phone on the bed and goes out of the room. Out of curiosity I check out mamaji's message, which to my utter amusement was:
"Candy crush me life dede."

I have 422 friends yet I'm lonely. I speak to all of them everyday yet none of them really know me.
Remember something?
Yes, these are the first two lines that the guy from the video titled LOOK UP spoke out. This video went quite viral last month and galvanized many people, I must say! Many DID look up. Yeah. yeah after sharing the video on Facebook and WhatsApp with taglines like
"we're a generation of idiots"
or
"look up from your phone and live life"
or simply 'share it' 'see it' and so on.
So they looked up, didn't find the love of their lives, as the guy in the video did, and ended up looking down again!

On this account I ask, do all these deeds of ours qualify us to call ourselves dumb?
Are we really a generation of dumb people and smart phones? Is all this technology just an illusion? Are we living in a world in which we are slaves of the technology we mastered?
Nope, not yet.

You know there's this thing with movies and smart phones - they are incredibly addictive.
# You start with a How I met your Mother episode and that sheer obsession makes you watch all the bloody episodes of that season in one go. You've just got to see it. You just have to!
#You scroll down the facebook newsfeed commenting and liking stuff along the way (as if it really matters!).The same old feeling comes in here as well. As a result- you are just sitting stationary with your face down and your thumb moving. Well, no offense  You just have to!
#Then there's this thing with games- it is so much fun to crack your friend's score or as a matter of fact our own's too! The thrill of getting to the next level and cracking it up with the highest points possible, ha! Not your fault mate as You just have to!
#It has been 3 days since you changed your WhatsApp status and all you're thinking now is what should be the next one. Maybe a Dp matching your status, that'd be cool! Again you see, pondering about your Dp plus status- You just have to!

Guys, let's try to remove the you just have to thing of ours. Again my friends, let's dare to do the unthinkable!
-- let's try watching our favorite series one episode at a time.
--let's decrease the newsfeed scrolling.
--let's not think about changing our WhatsApp status time and again.
--and the games- well yeah, it's difficult but you know we just have to! (stop wasting our time playing them)

So instead of pondering about what my next WhatsApp status should be, I thought over how people of my age could decrease some of their well known habits while using smart phones and laptops.
The main point that the video Look Up wanted to initiate was when we'll look up and do something else, we'll become more productive. Now that's a difficult task for us to do as we all are surrounded by smart phones, laptops and such great movies that it's really difficult for us to ignore them all! So the main aim here is to decrease the rate of looking down as well as try being more productive while looking down!
Here's some of what we can do:
# Remove the Facebook App from your mobile. Open your account only via your laptops or PCs. Facebook login rate will decrease from 4-5 times a day to once in 3-4 days.
#Keep in mind that WhatsApp is a messaging App, not a "change your Dp and your status" application. Limit its usage to messaging only.
#Always have a news App like TOI or The Hindu. It keeps you well informed about what's going on around in the world. But don't stop reading newspaper, nothing can commensurate that.
#The best way to play Candy Crush is by not connecting it with Facebook.
#If you're really serious about the games- Delete them at once from your mobiles without any second thoughts. I did it and I'm quite happy about it now.
#You can have a nice playlist and listen to songs instead of playing games. It serves as a better relaxer than the games.
#Get out of Twitter. It doesn't connect you with your friends and family, It connects you with the celebrities and let me tell you this, reading their tweets won't get you anywhere. Want to know what Messi's upto? Or Where's Kapil Sharma going for his next show? Or when's the next Christopher Nolan movie releasing? Go read a newspaper (everyday!), you'll find it all in there. No need to follow the celebs.
#Stop giving children mobile phones. If you could get through your childhood without the phones, so can they.
#So what you don't have Facebook and Twitter in your phone. Go try Quora. It's a great App and the best part is the more you'll scroll the more productive you'll become.
#There are many websites available that surely does give better information than What's in people's minds. Here are some of them:
  --Bigthink.com
holds ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.
  --ted.com
talks by smart and most fascinating thinkers and doers.
  --khanacademy.org
video lectures on just about any subject.
  --openculture.com
the best cultural and educational media on the web.
  --classicshorts.com
    the best short stories
  --instructables.com
    a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) site. You'll love it.
  --Duolingo.com
learn Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian and English for free. Free Android App is available too.
  --freerice.com
it's essentially a vocab challenge that donates rice to the needy with every question you get right.
..........and many more.

#Finally, pick a hobby and engage yourself in it. (Watching movies as a hobby doesn't count here, of course!)
Try a book (infinite battery life, page always loads, immune to viruses and never losses your data), cook, dance, go out and play your favorite sport, learn a foreign language, travel. Do whatever you like without using your phone or laptop. You can also try helping your mom in the kitchen, she'll feel proud I bet!

Yeah, the phones are indeed smart but are they making us dumb?
No, not until we learn to use them wisely. The phone or laptop from which you're reading this blog can make you a crackhead or very well a genius. It depends on how you use it.
So use it well guys, as being dumb and having a smart phone is too mainstream!

In the end, as I always do. Here goes a quote:
" Calm down people! Now is not the time for fear. That comes later."
Yup, batman inspired quote it is! I've to work on this.
